Alpe d'Huez is one of Europe's largest and highest ski resorts. It is also one of only 20 resorts in the world - all in Europe - with a lift-served vertical of over 2000 metres (6560 feet).
The village is amazing with a small number of bars & restaurants serving locally produced goods at prices which compare favourably with more commercial resorts.
Chamrousse is an average resort which is very cool because of all the event wich are orginized! (exemple: I did the 2000 nokia contest which was organized at Recoin that was hell -i finished 2nd-)
I have snow-boarded all over the world and can safely say that Chatel and the Port de Soilei region is amoung the best global powder. The combination of artistic and imaginative piste, with raw and wild off-piste is, quite simply, second to none.

The resort is hyper-efficient, uncrowded to the point of seeming deserted, and the accomodation in Le Hameau is remarkably spacious and non-concrete for France.
The snow quality is nearly always good, and with links to neighbouring chatel, youll never have a lack of snow. The staff at the ski school are really nice, but their English is limited.
A mountain resort destination since the early 1900's, La Clusaz has managed to grow big without sacrificing it's Savoyard roots or indulging in huge concrete appartment block construction.
While La Grave lacks scary steeps, it has challenging tree skiing that covers an enormous area. The skiing at La Grave is definitely more challenging than Verbier or Argentiere/Chamonix. La Grave is also cheap
La Plagne is one of the few major ski areas in France with a summer skiing area. It's located on the Glacier de Chiaupe below the Massif de Bellec?te, three gondola rides away from the main base area.
To get there by car, take the motorway to Albertville, the dual - carriageway then Bourg St Maurice and La Rosi?re in the direction of "Col du Petit St Bernard". The nearest train station is Bourg St Maurice.
